Gil Hodges.

Who is Gil Hodges?

Gil Hodges was a standout American baseball player and manager. He was best known for his time as a first baseman with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers and later the New York Mets. He fell in love with baseball as a child. He was a seven-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner. He helped the Dodgers win the 1955 World Series. After his playing career, he went on to manage the Mets, leading them to a stunning victory in the 1969 World Series, known as the "Miracle Mets." After passing away in 1972, he was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022. P.S. 193 is named after Gil Hodges because he was known for his power, consistency, and leadership on and off the field. He left a lasting legacy in baseball, both for his on-field accomplishments and his character. He became a Midwood, Brooklyn resident in 1948.  Gil Hodges married Joan Lombardi, who was originally from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He selected Brooklyn to purchase a family home and raise his four children. One of his children even went on to play for the New York Mets in the minor league division.  Our school is named after him as a result of his special community ties, leadership skills, aspiring spirit, determination and love of baseball. At P.S. 193, the Gil Hodges School, we are kind, we are curious and we are ready to learn!
